Our Story

"John, What Do You Think?"

the question that ignited our purpose

Coming from a low-income background, I have always quietly rebelled against the deliberate identification of indigence with my community and myself. Systemic failures reinforced this framing, especially for young people like me, conditioning us to see ourselves as recipients first, defined by our limitations. The impact of this pernicious enculturation is significant. I have come to believe that it is a double-edged sword: one edge illusively comforts us with the social palatability of persistent hardship, but the sharper, more dangerous edge keeps us from seeing our innate capacity to build.

My internal conflict found resolution thousands of miles away in the United States—not in a classroom, but through community engagement activities and campus enrichment programs. These experiential opportunities embedded within my educational journey fundamentally shaped my trajectory. Even as a scholarship recipient, I wasn't treated as a passive beneficiary, but as an active contributor. I was consistently asked, "John, what do you think?" with genuine expectation of insights. This was a radical departure from my local context, where youth are routinely overlooked as sources of solutions, rather than prioritized as partners in problem-solving. The shift was profound: my value was measured by contribution, not deficiency. I wasn't just participating, I was consulted. That experience crystallized a fundamental truth: poverty's deepest wound isn't financial lack or material deprivation, but the erosion of personal agency.

"I wasn't just participating, I was consulted. That experience crystallized a fundamental truth: poverty's deepest wound isn't financial lack or material deprivation, but the erosion of personal agency."

Driven by this revelation and a deep-seated conviction to reveal my community's true capacity, I consolidated my years of community work into a single force: founding The John Amhanesi Foundation (JAF) in 2024 to systematically dismantle the crisis of agency among youth in my community. We rejected traditional aid models that perpetuate dependency and instead built a system grounded in mutual investment. JAF exists not to create more recipients, but to construct a platform that unlocks individual agency regardless of the specific industry. We foster gainful engagement within actionable frameworks that encourage self-determination and sustainable growth.

We designed our model as a direct response to a destructive cycle where systemic inertia breeds dependency, teaching talented young people to wait for solutions rather than create them. Confronted by the daily reality of absent functional systems, they see no option but to view their communities as a catalogue of insurmountable problems, a perspective that reinforces the very conditions that stifle transformation. When young individuals are never empowered to think beyond immediate circumstances, that limitation becomes self-imposed imprisonment. Yet within this constraint lies untapped potential waiting to be activated.

Our approach disrupts this pattern through engagement programs that immerse participants in real-world professional scenarios, merging theoretical understanding with hands-on application. Through connections to varied industrial settings, we nurture analytical minds who challenge conventional wisdom and craft creative solutions to complex societal challenges. This operates through dual pathways: forging alliances with established institutions while also providing direct support to promising individuals, building tomorrow's generation of industrial, academic, and political Nigerian changemakers. Our programs prioritize transformation over basic instruction, shaping participants into leaders who remain civically active, intellectually rigorous, and motivated to pioneer progress within their communities and industries.
